What precautions should I take into account when trying to get pregnant?

The state of health of the woman at the time of trying to get pregnant is more important than we think. It is recommended to do a preconception consultation two or three months before pregnancy to improve the health status of the mother and minimize the possibility of congenital malformations.

In addition to the appropriate tests, your doctor may direct you to take vitamin supplements, such as folic acid or vitamin B12. It is very important that your doctor tells you what you should take, since the doses and type of supplementation will also be different depending on your background.

For example, folic acid supplementation before pregnancy is an effective preventive measure against neural tube defects, one of the most common congenital disorders. Neural tube defects are caused by an alteration of the embryonic process of neurulation between days 18 and 27 of pregnancy, when on many occasions the woman is not yet aware that she is pregnant.

It is also important to have healthy habits:

  • avoid alcohol and tabacco
  • sleep well
  • do exercise
  • take care of your diet

And above all things, forget about stress and anxiety and enjoy the process.
