Pregnancy is a very special stage in the life of women and families. The myths of pregnancy that circulate in the community usually generate anguish, anxiety, fear, confusion and stress.
Therefore, demystifying certain preconceptions can help improve the experience of pregnancy:
“If the woman touches her belly during pregnancy, it can lead to early delivery.”
False. It is normal for a woman to feel her abdomen frequently during pregnancy and this usually represents a loving and protective attitude towards her baby.
“That the mother has a lot of heartburn or heartburn means that her unborn baby is very hairy.”
False. Many women have heartburn during pregnancy due to changes in position, muscle tone and mechanical pressure on the digestive system that cause gastric acid from the stomach to rise up the esophagus, producing a burning sensation.
“The shape of the belly determines the sex of the baby.”
False. For obvious reasons, those who claim to know the sex of the baby according to the shape of the abdomen are correct 50 percent of the time, but without any scientific support. The shape of the abdomen depends on factors such as the size of the baby, the location of the uterus, the tone of the abdominal wall, and the number of previous pregnancies.
“If the belly is big the baby will be big and if it is small then the baby will be small.”
False. This is not always true since the size of the belly depends on various factors mentioned above, in addition to maternal weight and height.
“It is necessary to prepare the nipples in pregnancy to be able to breastfeed.”
False. The nipples should not be prepared. There is no scientific evidence to show that exercises performed on the nipple during pregnancy favor lactation.
Remember that the important thing is to be well informed, to be able to be calm and connect with the process you are experiencing!
Let us always remember that each pregnancy and each family: it is unique!
